Jacks are a fish family of over 200 species, including blue runners, trevally jacks, horse mackerel, jumping jacks or chinchard and carapau. Jacks are found around the world in the Atlantic, Mediterranean and Pacific.

There you'll see them at places like Poole harbour, lying with there heads near the surface, almost like they are sunbathing. In other parts of the world, like Turkey for example, they are much prized because they are hard to find and are rated as highly as bass. Because they are so plentiful here, they are cheap and not prized as much. There are three types of grey mullet: thin-lipped, gold, and thick-lipped - they all taste the same and are all bottom feeders, feeding on vegetation and sifting the goodness out of mud.
